This 5 ingredient drink is not only super refreshing and beneficial for your health, it will make you glow from the inside out. What I mean by this is Jamu has simply brought more joy into my life since my first batch!

You have to know, I’ve been dying to write this post! I really want everyone to drink this and make it a part of their daily routine as I have mine because our health is the most important thing we have.
When we moved to Austin, I started taking big steps to better my health. My main focus was managing stress, anxiety and my thyroid. I could feel I wasn’t healthy across the board. And across the board I mean in my body, in my mind and in my overall happiness in my life.
Shortly after arriving, I found out I have Hashimoto’s disease.
I really had to stop and ask myself how I want to really live and what serves me on the greatest level: living in a ball of anxiety worrying about what could go wrong or doing what I can to live my best life?
Both are choices we make.
I could sit back and continue living my days the way I was or I could make change happen for the betterment of my life and myself.
I kind of went on a fierce health and wellness overhaul! That sounds like so much fun doesn’t it.
I learned to manage the stressful and worrisome thoughts in my head that gave me anxiety the past seven years, started taking thyroid medicine, took long walks by myself in nature and changed my perspective in what I do for a living. Overall, you can say I made new choices that had a big impact on my life overall.
Oh yah, I did a lot of letting go. That too. Alot of learning how to flow with life vs resist.
In the past eight months, I’ve lost 22 pounds, I drink less alcohol (an occasional tequila and grapefruit or vino!), I have a thriving relationship with myself and I’m learning how to have a balance in my life between work and play.
I’ve noticed another really awesome side effect of getting right with yourself: the right people, messages and experiences come into your life. You know, the ones we all really want to have. And maybe it’s my attitude or how I’m feeling about myself, but it’s worth mentioning because it’s been a huge shift in my life to witness.
That brings me to how I found out about Jamu: this amazing drink I’m calling the Glow Tonic.
One random night, we were watching Chef’s Table, one of my favorite inspirational shows. If you’ve never watched it, each episode follows the story of a Chef who takes us through their personal journey of rising from failure to discovering where they were meant to be. This one in particular, with pastry chef Will Goldfarb, really caught my attention as he’s deemed the lone phoenix of the season.
Having experienced a journey of rising from the ashes like a Phoenix in the past two years (everything I spoke about above & what inspired the Phoenix Collection bracelets), I naturally felt myself pulled into his journey. Here’s a man who had been chasing his dream of being a pastry chef in NYC for years. Outside forces kept pushing him out and away from his dream. He never gave up. And he found a way to become one of the top pastry chef’s in NYC.
Several years later, he left it all behind for Bali, to find something “more real.”
Such an amazing episode that I think we all can relate to in so many ways. A story of finding ourselves.
Jamu, your natural wellness tonic
Speaking of real.
Along the trip, Will shares how Bali’s way of food is rooted in natural wellness. One of his favorite drinks is a health tonic almost all Indonesians drink, called Jamu. Not only did he have this killer, rising from the ashes, story…he also intrigued me because I am coming back to a more natural way of eating. I’m focusing on total wellness: whole, honest and real foods that support my body, mind and spirit in the best way possible.
I made my first batch and not only did 4-step process of creating Jamu make me feel calm and connected to doing something good for me.

Over the past 2 weeks, I’ve felt more energy, more calm and honestly, more joy in my day by taking the time to enjoy this refresher on the daily. I served it warm to Mark when he was coming down with a cold and the next morning his symptoms subsided. No joke.
The benefits of Jamu
Jamu is made of 5 simple ingredients: raw turmeric, raw ginger, lime juice, honey & water. A traditional Indonesian medicine dating back thousands of years ago, the different ingredients you can use to make your own personalized Jamu are endless.
- Turmeric, one of the most powerful healing herbs, is known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. It’s also an amazing immune booster. It’s the super hero and grand daddy of all spices.
- Ginger root is a powerful medicinal herb known for its anti-inflammatory properties.
There are so many benefits and this drink is good for all humans because it’s one of the most powerful healing tonics, no matter where you are in your health journey!

To make your own Jamu, it’s very simple. There are 5 steps. I want to emphasize that making your own Glow Tonic can be a healing and fun process! Turn on some Stevie Nicks, prep a clean space in your kitchen, wear an old dingy tshirt you wouldn’t mind getting turmeric on (I haven’t had an incident yet but it’s good to know turmeric stains) and enjoy this time creating something good and healthy for you.
It’s an act of self love!
- 1.5 finger sizes of turmeric root
- 1 finger size of ginger root
- 2 limes
- 2 tbsp honey
- 4 cups water
- Place 4 cups of water in a blender.
- Peel the skin of the turmeric and ginger root. Chop into pieces and place in blender.
- Blend on high until a rich orange/yellow color is seen and it's liquified.
- Place in a pan and heat on low to medium for 20 minutes. Stir occasionally.
- Add in the juice from 2 limes and the honey. Stir until combined.
- Pour over a strainer and into a glass bowl.
- Place in fridge. Once chilled, enjoy.
Can you use turmeric powder in place of the root?
I would not recommend it as it has more of a earthy flavor and will make the Jamu taste differently and more importantly, the powder has very little of the active ingredient curcumin in it for the benefits.
Notes & ways to drink it
- Drink one to two cups per day. I have been doing 2!
- You can drink chilled and over ice as a refreshing daily tonic (how I love it!) or you can heat it up and drink it at night to wind down or if you have a cold
- Shake jar before serving so you can mix everything up
- Be sure to clean everything right away as the turmeric will definitely stain!
- Double the ingredient list above to make a week’s batch worth. You can get mason jars at the store or a large one (pictured in my hand in photo) and that is a double batch. That will make 8 cups which covers you for a week.
